Wren House Brewing Co.

Wren House is a treasure not just in Phoenix but throughout the United States because it produces an exquisitely brewed beer with Arizona roots. You can also include Wren House’s deceptively complex Valley Beer on your list of the top 10 beers to drink while getting clean. A New England DIPA brewed with Strata, Cascade, Ariana, and Mosaic hops should definitely be on your list.

Wren House produces gorgeous beers with a hint of Arizona in each can, ranging from IPAs to lagers and everything in between. Holy Mountain or Wayfinder come to mind.

Huss Brewing Co.

Huss produces award-winning brews such as the Scottsdale Blond, which earned medals at the U.S. Open in 2016 and 2018, and The Husstler Series Milk Stout, which took first place in the Sweet Stout category at the Great American Beer Fest. Huss Brewing, established in 2013 by Jeff and Leah Huss, has gained popularity among locals for being family-run, Arizona-focused, and locally produced. In fact, the brewery has grown to become one of the biggest independent breweries in the state.

Having worked in the beer business for a combined thirty years, the brewery creates instant classics like the Koffee Kölsch, a light-bodied beer with a kick of cold-steeped caramel and hazelnut coffee beans. And, let’s not forget the hops Citra, Falconer’s Flight, and Hopaloosa, which are all great options.

Tombstone Brewing Company

Tombstone Brewing is a true gem in the rough. It was first established in the namesake (and extremely strange) town of Tombstone, southeast of Phoenix. In fact, we included it in our list of the seven lesser-known breweries you must visit throughout the nation.

The brewery built a second site in Phoenix in the fall of 2020. Founder Matt Brown and head brewer Weedy Weidenthal have produced great beer, which they refer to as “world class,” for the past four years. Although the new site is more relaxed, it still serves the DIPAs, IPAs, and triple IPAs that Tombstone is known for.

The most recent additions to Tombstone’s lineup are the 8.5 percent ABV Most Hops DIPA and the triple New England IPA. The brewery is well known for these outstanding Western marvels. Fruited sours, such as the Triple Berry Cobbler and the Strawberry Shortcake Sour, are abundant on the menu if you’re seeking something lighter to battle the Arizona sun.

Arizona Wilderness DTPHX Beer Garden

Arizona Wilderness, which Jonathan Buford and Patrick Ware founded to showcase their love of Arizona via beer, has joined Wren House as one of the most renowned brewers in the nation. Local seasonal honey and malted grains from Arizona are both used in beers like Don’t F#% K It Up. Sonora White Wheat and Sinagua Malt are used to make Sonora Wheat, a heritage grain witbier. With a Saison made with harvested and roasted Velvet mesquite pods and a hazy IPA created to honor the rich cultural history of downtown Phoenix, the list of their offerings is never-ending.

Spend the full afternoon at the Gilbert Brewpub when you go. Work your way through this ode to Arizona while relaxing on the terrace with a few Bavarian pretzels and a Refuge IPA.

Barrio Brewing

Since 1991, Tucson’s Barrio Brewing has been causing beer connoisseurs to salivate. They started their brewery at that time, inside Tucson institution Gentle Ben’s. Since then, they’ve moved, but they’ve kept brewing their own house brews, such as Taylor Jane’s Raspberry Ale, Copperhead Pale Ale, and Barrio Blonde. Seasonal specialties and creative concoctions like the espresso-infused Mocha Java Stout are also available on their tap list. Barrio may be Arizona’s oldest brewery, but they’ve shown no signs of slowing down thanks to their extensive selection of house brews and renowned happy hour.

Some beers you must try at Barrio include, Citrazona, Barrio Rojo, Tucson Blonde, and Hipsterville Hazy IPA.

Lumberyard Brewing Company

Few would deny that beer is a great way to stay warm on a chilly night, and the folks at Lumberyard brewing think so too. If you like to try out new brews, you should visit Lumberyard Brewing Company if that’s your thing. Even on the coldest evenings, their Flagstaff IPA will keep you toasty. This robust ale rates a 90 on the international bitterness scale and features a combination of hops. Additionally, Lumberyard offers crowd-pleasers, including the Red Ale and Knotty Pine Pale Ale. The same group that owns and runs Beaver Street Brewery also owns and runs this microbrewery. Even though they both offer many of the same beers, Lumberyard is in a better location. It features a large patio and is housed in a renovated lumber-era structure in downtown Flagstaff.

The mainstays here are Flagstaff IPA, Hazy Angel IPA, and Lumberyard, among many others. You also get seasonal and limited edition options, which are also worth a try.

Four Peaks

The emblematic brewery in Arizona is Four Peaks. The Kilt Lifter, the company’s signature beer, has helped Four Peaks become a nationally renowned brewery since it first opened on 8th Street in 1996. In addition to the flavor of roasted barley, this Scottish-style brew boasts a malty sweetness. It received multiple honors, including the World Beer Cup Gold Award the previous year, proving its excellent.

In addition, staples like the Hop Knot IPA, Peach Ale, and 8th Street Pale Ale have elevated Four Peaks’ profile on a national scale. Four Peaks, which is only a half-mile from the Arizona State University campus and serves beer that has won awards, seems like a welcoming neighborhood pub. The burgers and pizzas are delicious and go well with the award-winning beers on tap.

Mother Road Brewing Company
